Making Sense of the Information AgeTM A Web Site By David H. Gleason |
| Access and Education Access and education issues in Information Ethics abound. There is a "digital divide," separating those who have access to information technology from those who do not. In the United States and around the world, the digital divide matches the disparity of wealth. Access requires, among many other things, electric power, literacy and telecommunications. This division is not easily overcome! In the West, there is also an age barrier to technology. Many people born before 1960 struggle with systems, while most born after 1980 assume information systems ubiquity. However, the assimilated young do not have much authority, and many with authority did not grow up with IT. The solution to the age divide problem is education. The solution to the digital divide generally is both education and better distribution of the world's wealth - a solution that continues to prove elusive.
